Is it as easy as ABC? Most of the time, achieving a big dream or goal takes a lot of yourself, hard work, and time. Going through the entire alphabet and making a list of what's important in achieving goals is a good way to start to sharpen your goal-setting skills and get yourself motivated.
Listing the ABCs of dreams is appropriate anytime you're thinking about setting new goals, but particularly at the start of the school year or as a part of New Year resolutions.
Individuals can make their own ABC list, or this can be a group/class activity with everyone working together brainstorming the entire list or with each person doing one letter of the alphabet.
Here's one list for inspiration adapted from a list created by teacher Wanda Carter in St. Augustine, FL:
To achieve your dreams, remember these ABCs…
Avoid negative people, places, things, sources,
and habits.
Believe in yourself.
Care about what you do, be passionate.
Do it – don't just talk about it.
Enjoy whatever you choose to take on.
Family, friends, and teachers are good sources
of support.
Gather the resources you need.
Hang on through the gray days, when the
going gets tough.
Ignore those who try to discourage you.
Jump high, reach for the stars.
Know your strengths and weaknesses.
Luck happens most to those who work hard.
Make a commitment and stick to it.
Never, no, can't are words you should avoid
because they limit you.
Open your eyes and see things as they really are.
Practice makes perfect.
Quitters never win and winners never quit.
Read, study, and learn everything you can about
what's important to you.
Stop procrastinating.
Think – your brain is your best asset.
Understand yourself in order to better understand others.
Visualize your goal so that you can see and feel it.
Write out a plan; don't just try to remember it
in your head.
X-ceed what you and others expect of you;
always push yourself.
You are unique and offer things no one else can.
Zero in on your target – and go for it!
Once your ABC list is complete, post a big version or put each letter on its own decorated sheet. Use the ABCs as a daily reminder of what it takes to achieve a dream. |
