Dear President Obama,

Congratulations! We are happy, amazed and proud that you have been elected President. Thank you for making your mark on history and proving that anyone who is really smart and works hard can become President.

We are dreaming of a better America. Our class voted on ways you and all Americans could help America. We hope you can help the United States of America in several ways.

To begin with, we want to stop the drugs in our community. We are sick of it. It brings car crashes, violence, and murders to our communities. We want to feel safe. We also feel the drugs make gangs dangerous. They rob each other and kill innocent people. Rochester has a bad habit of often having many young people dying. We promise you that we won’t join a gang or do drugs!

Thank you for saying that you are going to cut our parents' taxes. That means they’ll have more money to pay for utilities, rent, gas and other things we need in order to live. Please keep your promise to lower their taxes.

Here at Henry Hudson School #28 we realize that you alone can not change America. We are ready to do our part too! Based on school wide input we are focusing on three things. If we can, we will participate in giving to charity. We have many opportunities like the food drives in our school. Another way would be by saving our allowance or change we find. We could donate a part of it to places that help (like church and the Red Cross). We could give away some of our gently used clothing as well.
Recycling our clothing is also good for the environment.

Our second pledge to better America is to keep our environment clean. We will do this by recycling at school and at home. We will encourage our parents to be green as well. We won’t litter; rather we will participate in community service projects like the city of Rochester’s Clean Sweep and Day of Caring.

Last but not least, we will take a stand against violence. We will try to stop our friends from fighting. We will use peer mediation to talk about our disagreements. Maybe we’ll set the example for the ways countries should interact when they have a problem. In our neighborhoods, we will cooperate with the police in order to protect the good people. We also discussed boycotting movies that are too violent. Not everyone agrees on this one, but we’re working on it. At least we all agree that violence is not the way to solve problems in real life.

We look forward to your thoughtful leadership. As America’s future, we expect big things and we will do big things too!

God Bless America,
