The Legacy Center is
the center of the Legacy Project's activities – physically and metaphorically. Not everyone will be able to visit the real-world site. So we want to bring the site to you through a variety of online experiences for children, teens, young and older adults, parents, and teachers.
Follow the building design process through our online postings; find out what's blooming in the arboretum through the images of acclaimed nature photographer Peter Van Rhijn; explore 3-D online models of parts of the real building and arboretum; participate in online workshops; interact with others who are part of the Legacy Project's online learning community; and explore the free online family activities and school lesson ideas.
We'll also be developing a virtual world based on the real-world Legacy Center site. A virtual world is a computer-based simulated environment in which users can interact via avatars. Virtual worlds represent a powerful new medium for education. Participation and persistence allow for continuing and growing social interactions, which themselves can serve as a basis for collaborative education. The use of virtual worlds can give teachers the opportunity to have a greater level of student participation. It allows users to be able to carry out tasks that could be difficult in the real world due to constraints and restrictions, such as cost, scheduling or location. Virtual worlds also have the capability to adapt and grow to different user needs. Activities in the virtual world of the Legacy Center will also be reflected on the actual real-world site.
