PART II
ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO
Part II of this kit contains activities that can be adapted for use with children of different ages and grandparents/grandfriends. Note that the upcoming Holiday Activity Kit (available October, 2001) will contain a special section with intergenerational activities appropriate for older adults with moderate to severe physical or cognitive limitations.
Reading and discussing Something to Remember Me By, the storybook that inspired the national Legacy Project, can be the starting point that leads into activities.
Many of the activities can be used during a special Grandparents Day event, while others can be done leading up to or after the event. Some activities are long-term projects for schools or community groups. Others are especially appropriate for families (particularly those labeled Family Fun "Homework"). To encourage and support intergenerational bonds if you're running a Grandparents Day event, you can also suggest or hand out activities to grandparents and grandchildren as "homework" -- activities they can do together when they get home.
The suggested timing for each activity is indicated. Also included are curriculum connections for schools, a list of materials, and step-by-step directions.
Note that books and websites mentioned in the text are fully referenced in the annotated bibliographies at the end of this kit.
